Project Outline
Wrexham County Borough Council was the second local authority in Wales to launch a county wide fuel poverty and energy efficiency project. In partnership with Warm Wales, Wrexham council made it possible for every resident to have the opportunity to become more energy efficient. This could bring about £10 million investment to people in Wrexham.

The ‘Bringing warm homes and improved health to Wrexham’ project involves many other organisation too – including the Wales Assembly Government, National Grid and npower – who have created a dynamic partnership to help eradicate fuel poverty and tackle energy efficiency on a large scale.

Wrexham council also wants to help residents improve their health, wellbeing and home safety. The ‘Bringing warm homes and improved health to Wrexham’ project raises awareness of and refers householders to council departments and organisations that already offer services within the county. The council’s own Health Promotion and Social Services teams, the Community Safety Police, the Fire Safety team and Care & Repair Wrexham deliver services in partnership with Warm Wales.

Project Benefits

The primary aim of ‘Bringing warm homes to Wrexham’ was to reduce the number of people in fuel poverty in the area by applying energy efficiency measures to 80% of the fuel poor homes.

The project was designed and set up to:

  • Reduce cold related and cold induced deaths and illness in the County Borough
  • Assess the energy efficiency needs of 80% of homes
  • Create 25 local jobs – 50% of which will be sustainable for at least 5 years
  • Wherever possible, raise home energy efficiency levels to meet the requirements of the Welsh Housing Quality Standard
  • Establish a local Energy Advice Centre in a town centre shop which we hope to share with the local Credit Union
  • Increase energy efficiency awareness in the area
  • Reduce CO2 emissions
  • Lower fuel usage
  • Generate additional Benefits claims for qualifying households
  • Work with Communities First Schemes
  • Offer referrals to a range of local schemes providing service for vulnerable groups such as older people and young children.
